Carla
was suffering with 150 epileptic seizures per day. She put her trust
in the Comprehensive Oklahoma Program for Epilepsy (COPE) team at
OU MEDICAL CENTER’s Level IV Epilepsy Center. She learned an
innovative surgical brain procedure called “cortical mapping”
would be successful in supplying important information about controlling
her seizures. Physicians placed a one-millimeter thick membrane grid
on the surface of Carla’s brain. This grid recorded her seizures
and accurately correlated the brain function in the seizure region
to the corresponding body part. This cortical mapping process identified
for Carla the area of the body, if any, which would be impacted if
the seizure area was removed from the brain. The entire right hemisphere
of Carla’s brain was removed and as predicted by the cortical
mapping, had minimal effect on her capabilities. The cortical mapping
procedure allowed Carla and her family to make the decision regarding
a drastic surgery that ultimately resulted, to date, in a very proud
seizure-free status. |
