  • In education, research and patient care, the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center is the state's premier academic health center and regional leader in meeting the challenges of 21st-century health care. The most concentrated source of medical expertise in Oklahoma, the OU Health Sciences Center's new facilities and new technology -- plus an internationally prominent faculty -- place it on the leading edge of the nation's institutions of higher medical education.
  • One of only four comprehensive academic health centers in the nation with seven professional schools, the OU Health Sciences Center serves more than 3,100 students enrolled in more than 70 graduate and undergraduate programs on the Oklahoma City campus and at the Schusterman Center at the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa. In addition, more than 600 physicians are receiving residency training in Oklahoma City and Tulsa.
  • The OU Health Sciences Center serves as the state’s training facility for physicians, biomedical scientists, nurses, dentists, pharmacists and a wide range of allied health and public health professionals.   • With cancer being one of the leading causes of death in the United States, the OU Health Sciences Center is creating a comprehensive cancer center that will allow the people of Oklahoma to receive world-class treatment without leaving the state. The OU Cancer Center is staffed with some of the nation’s finest cancer physicians and offers state-of-the-art technology.
  • Clinical trials are more readily available to Oklahoma citizens with the opening of the General Clinical Research Center at the OU Health Sciences Center. Funded with a $6.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, the center investigates treatments for a variety of human diseases, including cancer, lupus and high-risk social behavior.
  • More than one-third of the 214 state physicians named to the latest Best Doctors in America list are faculty physicians at the OU Health Sciences Center. OU Physicians accepts referrals from across the state and region and care for hospital patients at the OU MEDICAL CENTER.
  • Research grants and contracts and sponsored-program activities at the OU Health Sciences Center totaled $76.5 million for FY2003, an 11 percent increase from FY2002. More than $39.3 million of the research funding came from the National Institutes of Health, which is considered the gold standard for benchmarking research activities at academic health sciences centers. More than half of all NIH expenditures in the state of Oklahoma result from OU Health Sciences Center research.
  • The OU Health Sciences Center is known for its research programs in cellular and molecular medicine, gene regulation, structural biology, microbiology and immunology, cardiovascular physiology, neuroscience and pharmaceutical sciences. The center’s growing faculty and facilities offer unparalleled opportunities for students, patient care and the development of the biomedical industry in Oklahoma.
  • OU Health Sciences Center-developed technology is advancing the economy of Oklahoma. Eight new companies that commercialize technology created by OU Health Sciences Center researchers have been established in Oklahoma City.
  • OU has become one of the primary centers in the world for genome studies, with the Norman campus ranking fourth in the world in total bases sequenced for the human genome project. The OU Health Sciences Center ranks second in the world for the number of microbial genomes being sequenced.
  • Two-thirds of all Oklahoma physicians, half of the state’s dentists and a significant percentage of Oklahoma’s other health care professionals earned their degrees from the OU Health Sciences Center. In addition, the seven OU Health Sciences Center colleges are the primary source of continuing education for the state's health care professionals.
  • The scientists, scholars and clinicians appointed to the OU Health Sciences Center faculty stand at the leading edge of their profession. They not only train the next generation of health care providers and researchers, many are themselves practicing professionals actively involved in improving the lives and health of Oklahomans.
  • The clinical practice of the OU Health Sciences Center physicians is provided through OU Physicians. These physicians represent the largest multi-specialty medical group in the state, with nearly 400 physicians, offering almost every adult and child specialties. All OU Physicians are faculty members in the OU College of Medicine. The 178,000-square-foot OU Physicians building meets the needs of patients through efficient services, access and convenience.
