• The VA Medical Center is a general medicine and surgical facility in Oklahoma City which serves a population in excess of 250,000 veterans residing in the western two-thirds of Oklahoma.
  
• The VA Medical Center and clinics treat nearly 40,000 veterans on an outpatient basis annually, accounting for more than 300,000 visits. The Medical Center provides care for almost 5,000 of those annually in an inpatient setting.
  
• The hospital’s mission it to develop an integrated healthcare delivery system which improves the health of the category A veteran population by providing primary care, specialized care, extended care and related social support services.
  
• The VA Medical Center has a 222 bed General Medical and Surgical Hospital and Healthcare Center; a 40 bed Extended Care Unit; 27 bed Friendship House, 14 bed Hospitality Unit for a total of 289 authorized beds. The VA has outpatient clinics in Lawton, Ponca City, Newkirk, Ardmore, Clinton, Okla. and Wichita Falls, Texas.
  
• The Joint Commission accredits the Center and its staff for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, a private group that evaluates the nation’s hospitals. The Center received a score of 92 of a possible 100 on its last JCAHO inspection visit, placing it among the elite hospitals in the nation.
  
• With an emphasis on outpatient care, the Center reduced the average daily inpatient census from 204.2 in 1995 to 116.5 in 2000. During the same time, outpatient visits rose from 228,910 in 1995 to 306,388 in 2000.
  
• The VA Medical Center’s 1,508 dedicated employees provide expertise and direction in patient care, medical education and clinical research. The variety of specialized programs demonstrate technological excellence and enables the Oklahoma City VA Medical Center to serve as a regional referral center for other VA facilities.
  
• The VA Medical Center’s research program includes major initiatives in cardiology, hematology, infectious diseases, pulmonary diseases, nephrology, rheumatology immunology, endocrinology/metabolism, hypertension, behavioral sciences and urology. Areas of special interest are electrocardiology, clinical studies in thrombosis, heredity of lupus erythematosus, trauma medicine and inflammatory bowel disease.
  
• The VA Medical Center serves as a health care education center. Affiliated with the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, more than 1,000 students receive health care training in 21 different disciplines annually at this medical center.
  
• The VA Medical Center has established an Extended Care Unit, which is designed to keep the elderly patient out of the nursing home. The unit is directed toward rehabilitation and returning the patients to their own home environments where they can be cared for by themselves or by other non-skilled workers or family members.
  
• The VA Medical Center houses a Center for the Treatment of Alzheimer's and degenerative Neurological Disorders.
  
• The VA Medical Center provides outreach to remote locations via a network of satellite and community-based clinics and the use of modern computer technology and teleradiology.
  
• The VA Medical Center has a state of the art nuclear medicine multi imaging system with one of the most advanced computer systems in the country.
  
• The VA Medical Center is the coordinating hospital for the execution of a national Disaster Medical Response Program for the State of Oklahoma.
