14 th Annual Oklahoma Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect and Healthy Families

More than 60 educational sessions on various child abuse and neglect issues will comprise the 14 th Annual Oklahoma Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect and Healthy Families.    Presented by The Center on Child Abuse and Neglect and The Child Study Center at the University of   Oklahoma College of Medicine, the conference will be held September 27 through 29.    The National Center for Employee Development (also known as the United States Postal Service Training Center) in Norman is the conference site.  

The general public is welcome to attend.   The conference is specifically designed for professionals in child protective services, juvenile services, nursing, community-based family resources, child guidance, mental health, law, medicine, substance abuse services, law enforcement, prevention and education.   More than 1,000 people from throughout the southwest region are expected to attend the conference.  

Jerry Moe, National Director of Children's Programs at the Betty Ford Center, will provide the keynote speech, "What about the Children: From Risk to Resilience".   It will focus on how substance abuse in a family affects children throughout their lives.   Moe will also explore critical elements to coping and healing in light of the many challenges these children face.  

Sessions range from education on evaluation and diagnosis of problems to collaboration with law enforcement to development of effective healing models.   Specific topics for discussion include intergenerational trauma, issues specific to Native American families, supporting military families during deployment and the role of humor and animal-assisted interventions.
